Help Your Students Get Published
Even when I'm building sites which aren't specifically educational in
their scope, I still love to think of ways to get students involved. And the
Amateur-Hikers.com website is no exception to this rule.
If you browse the Amateur-Hikers.com
website, you will discover that there is an extensive listing of mountains from
around the world. Many of these mountains do not have descriptions listed.
Here's where a very simple research and writing project comes in for your classroom...
|
Important Notices For Teachers! Please do not have your students
submit descriptions to the site without first proofreading them! Poorly written descriptions will not be published! Help your students
make their writing clear and error free before submitting it to the site!
Also, when it comes time to submit your students' writing, they can either submit it "anonymously", or you
can create a membership account, and submit their writing on their behalf.

Step 1: Getting StartedHave your students browse the site, and pick a mountain which does not have a description listed. This might
be a mountain near where they live, or perhaps a mountain on the other side of the world. It might be a mountain they
want to climb someday, or a mountain they already have climbed.
Students can use the Search Page to help find a mountain.
Step 2: ResearchMaybe your students already know something about the mountain they've chosen, maybe they don't. Here's where a little bit
of research comes in. Have your students look, either in an atlas, an encyclopedia, or online for information about the mountain they've chosen.
|
Step 3: WritingNow that they've done their research, they can write a description. It doesn't have to be long, just a paragraph or two, describing what they
know about the mountain they've chosen. (Look at the right-hand column of the Recent page for some examples)
Step 4: PublishingOnce they have written their paragraph(s), and you have proofread their work, they can go to the
page for the mountain they selected and click the "write a description" link.
Since your students probably don't have a membership account on the site, they can choose to "Submit Anonymously". Now they can type their paragraph, preview it, and submit it.
Within one to two days, if their writing is clear, well written, and error free, it will be published on the site!
